Mt Roskill Report: Phil Goff MP Reports
"For much of the last 100 years, landfill roads and utility construction have badly damaged the natural environment on the shores of Manukau Harbour.
The Onehunga Bay/Hugh Watt Drive area is an obvious example. With the rebuilding of the motorway, we have a unique opportunity to undo some of the damage and create a great recreation area for Hillsborough and Onehunga residents. The road from the airport to Auckland City is the gateway to our city for many visitors and now we have the change to create a positive impression.
I am working with The Onehunga Enhancement Society (TOES) to encourage a joint effort by Transit, the Auckland Regional Council and the Auckland City Council to create a 12 hectare reserve, with several sandy beaches on the harbour side of State Highway 20 allowing access to the foreshore for the public.
Hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent on the Waitemata Harbour upgrade. It’s time to do something for residents on the south side of the isthmus!
For more information visit the TOES website at toesociety.org.nz."
